In recent years (prior to the pandemic), major retailers expanded their Black Friday shopping hours to include Thanksgiving Day, meaning shoppers could get a jump start on their holiday shopping on Turkey Day itself instead of waiting for Friday morning to roll around.

However, some companies — and many consumers — maintain that stores should be closed on the national holiday so workers can spend time with their families. In fact, a survey conducted by BestBlackFriday.com in 2019 found that 72% of consumers polled believed businesses should be closed on Thanksgiving.

Of course, the pandemic changed our shopping habits, too, with people around the world relying more than ever on online retail. Even now, many people feel no need to shop in-store anymore — much less on Thanksgiving Day.

Several retailers — including some big names — have confirmed that they’ll be closed on Turkey Day this year. Many of them will still host online sales on Thanksgiving Day before opening store doors again on Black Friday.
