Utah state trooper hit from behind by runaway car

Posted

CACHE COUNTY, UT (KUTV/CNN) – A car sliding on an icy highway hit a patrolman who was helping a stranded driver over the weekend.

A video of the incident captured Sgt. Cade Brenchley walking toward a stranded white car.

Then, a sliding black car smashed into him from behind, launching him into the air.

Brenchley broke his shoulder and some ribs. He’s now recovering.

"I woke up and I saw snow and I was laying there, and it knocked the wind out of me,” Brenchley said. “I was gasping for breath. I was right up against the car and I remember thinking to myself, 'I've been hit.'"

The Utah Department of Public Safety said several bystanders came to Brenchley’s aid after he was hit.

The department also said in a news release that Brenchley was the 11th trooper hit on Utah roads in 2018.

The crash is being used a reminder to drivers to slow down.
