Toddler shot through apartment wall

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO (KKTV/CNN) - A 1-year-old boy is recovering from a gunshot wound to his legs.

Police say a neighbor shot the child through the wall of his apartment.

"I thought her house would be a safe place, and I never thought this would happen in my own home," said Blanca Rodriguez, the boy's mother, through an interpreter.

She said she heard what sounded like an explosion, and then seconds later, her son was screaming, blood coming from his legs.

"I feel like I'm always going to have that image and it's never going to go away," Rodriguez said.

Since the bullet went through a black bed frame, she had no idea what had just happened to her son.

"Yeah, I was terrified. I was scared. I didn't like seeing my baby like that. I thought he was going to bleed to death," Rodriguez said.

She said her neighbor, the suspect, and his girlfriend immediately ran over and knocked on their door, even apologized.

It was only later, when police showed her where the bullet came through her bedroom wall, that she realized her neighbor fired a gun and shot her baby.

"There's really no explanation of what happened in their apartment for them to do that, to have a gun and shoot it, because he could've taken my son away."

The child is at home recovering.

His parents aren't sure if he will have trouble walking.

The neighbor is facing charges of illegal discharge of a firearm.

A Gofundme page has been set up to help pay for the child's medical bills.
