Tip warned FBI FL shooter might "explode"

Posted

(CNN) – A tip the FBI received in January about Nikolas Cruz, the Florida high school shooter, came from a woman close to him concerned he was “going to explode.”

The missed tip was revealed last week, and FBI Director Christopher Wray apologized for the “additional pain this causes all those affected by this horrific tragedy.” CNN and the Associated Press reported on the contents of the call on Friday.

The caller says she is worried about Cruz “getting into a school and just shooting the place up.”

She makes particular note of his Instagram account, which drew attention in the immediate aftermath of the shooting for his many posts with guns and other weapons.

“It’s alarming to see these pictures and know what he is capable of and what could happen,” she says.

She adds at one point: “I just want to, you know, get it off my chest in case something does happen. And I do believe something’s going to happen.”

CNN reported on two more warnings about Cruz from last year, one to police that he could be a “school shooter in the making” and another to police pointing out on Instagram that he had written he “planned to shoot up the school.”

One student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where Cruz killed 17 people last week, said on the day of the shooting: “A lot of people were saying that it would be him. They would say he would be the one to shoot up the school. Everybody predicted it.”
