(CNN) - Stephen Hawking's ashes will be buried near one of the greatest scientists in modern history.

His ashes will be interred at Westminster Abbey during a Thanksgiving service later this year and be placed near the grave of Sir Isaac Newton.

Hawking once held a prestigious position at Britain's Cambridge University that was previously held by Newton.

Even so, Hawking once said if he had the chance to meet either Newton or Marilyn Monroe, he would opt for the movie star.

Hawking suffered from ALS, a neurodegenerative disease. He died on March 14 at the age of 76.
