(RNN) - Retail workers at traditional department stores lost significantly more jobs than coal miners.

Between 2001 and 2016, department store jobs dropped 46 percent and coal mining jobs dropped 32 percent, Labor Department data show, according to CNN Money

Hardest hit by the department store job losses are females, who make up about 60 percent of such employees compared to 47 percent of all workers.

Thus far in 2017, 3,300 store closings have been announced, a number double that in the 2016 period.
