WESTLAND, MI (WXYZ/CNN) – Kids in one Michigan community get the chance every year to frolic in mud without getting in trouble with their parents, thanks to a first responder training exercise.
The 30th annual Mud Day let kids get dirty from head to toe at a community park, which was transformed into a 75-foot by 150-foot mud pit.
Children ages 12 and younger charged into the mud and participated in activities like mud limbo and wheelbarrow races. Two children were crowned King and Queen Mud after the games.
But the event isn’t just fun; it helps first responders train for dangerous situations.
The Western Wayne County Hazmat team was on hand Tuesday with hoses to practice for a mass decontamination event.
Cleaning off the mud is great training, according to Wayne County Executive Warren Evans.
“The firemen tell me if you can get mud off them, you can get anything off them,” Evans said.
