(RNN) - Gerber achieved a first when it announced the winner of its 2018 Gerber Baby Contest Wednesday.

Lucas Warren, a 1-year-old from Georgia, is the first contest winner with Down syndrome.

Cortney Warren, the child's mother, told TODAY.com she entered the Gerber contest by chance, and after posting a photo of Lucas on Instagram received the news that their son had been chosen from more than 140,000 entries to be the 2018 Gerber Spokesbaby.

The famed annual contest has been around since 1928.

The contest pays homage to Ann Turner Cook, whose face has been featured as the iconic charcoal-sketched logo on Gerber’s packaging since 1928.

Cook celebrated her 90th birthday in 2016.

Artist Dorothy Hope Smith submitted the first hand-drawn picture which has appeared on Gerber Baby Products since 1931.
