ESPANOLA, NM (RNN) – Public servants are always on call.

Two men are being hailed as heroes after they risked their lives shielding multiple people from gunfire at a convenience store.

Video posted by the Espanola Police Department shows people scatter while off-duty firefighter Enrico Trujillo shields a woman with his body, near the entrance of the store. The pair then get off the ground and run to the back of the store where others are taking shelter.

"I didn't have time to react or think about anything else," Trujillo told KRQE.

Trujillo said he saw someone with a loaded gun walk to the back of a vehicle. That’s when the gun shots began.

Another unidentified man took two children in his arms and shielded them with his body as shots were fired in their direction.

"Without hesitation, this man protected three lives. Thank you sir for your bravery," the police department said in a Facebook post.

Police said two men were arrested in connection to the shooting.
