(RNN) - Evangelist Billy Graham turned 99 on Tuesday, Nov. 7. The day marks the start of a yearlong observation, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association said.

Son Franklin Graham said that his father's life "has been an amazing journey."

The much-loved preacher of the gospel traveled the world preaching to millions for more than seven decades.  It is estimated by the Association that he shared with about 215 million people in 185 nations and territories.

The Association said Graham enjoyed a lemon cake with lard icing with his family to celebrate. He lives in Montreat, NC. His wife, Ruth, died in 2007.

Each month leading up to his 100th birthday, the Association plans to highlight key moments in his ministry, which will be featured at BillyGraham.org and in Decision magazine.

“My father always wants the focus to be on the Lord Jesus Christ, and not on him; and so we will point to the amazing ways God has worked in lives around the world, through the ministry of Billy Graham,” Franklin Graham said, according to the Association.
