TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Second-seeded Florida State (17-1-3) will look to claim its second ACC title when the Seminoles square-off against fourth-seeded Virginia Tech (16-3-2) in the 2013 ACC Women’s Soccer Championship finals on Sunday, November 10 at 4:00 p.m. inside WakeMed Park.
The Seminoles advanced to their seventh conference championship game after downing third-seeded North Carolina on Friday, 2-1 in overtime. The Hokies earned a berth after handing top-seeded Virginia its first loss of the season downing the Cavaliers 4-2.
Florida State will play in the league finals for the seventh time in school history and for the fifth time in the last eight years. FSU’s first ACC title came in 2011 when the Seminoles defeated Wake Forest in penalty kicks after playing to a 1-1 tie after 110 minutes.
Sunday’s match marks the first meeting between Florida State and Virginia Tech in the ACC Championship game. FSU faced North Carolina in its first five appearances in the finals and then faced Wake Forest in 2011. FSU is 0-5-1 all-time when playing in the league championship game.
Four of the six title games that the Seminoles have played in previously have been decided by one goal including two in overtime and one decided in penalty kicks. Sunday’s final marks the fifth time FSU has played for the ACC Championship in Cary, N.C., and the sixth time the Noles have played for the title in the state of North Carolina.
Florida State and Virginia Tech are meeting in the ACC Tournament for the third time in league tournament history on Sunday with all three games coming in Cary. The Seminoles and Hokies played to a scoreless draw back in 2008 with VT advancing on pks in the first round. FSU got its revenge a year later defeating Virginia Tech 2-0 in the semifinals.
Two weeks ago in Blacksburg, Dagny Brynjarsdottir registered her second career two-goal game as the Icelandic native broke a 1-1 tie netting the game-winner in the 87th minute as Florida State defeated Virginia Tech 2-1. The Seminoles came away with the victory despite being outshot by the Hokies 12-5.
FSU is unbeaten all-time against Virginia Tech posting 12 wins and one tie in 13 meetings. The Seminoles have won six straight over the Hokies since playing to a 0-0 tie in the 2008 ACC Quarterfinals.
The Seminoles have outscored the Hokies 22-4 all-time in the series while posting nine shutouts including four in the last five meetings. Sunday marks the fourth time the two schools have met on neutral soil with the last three meetings all coming in the ACC Tournament.
Sunday’s match marks the fourth straight meeting that both teams will face each other when ranked in the top 25 and the second meeting in a row that will feature both teams ranked in the top 5.
