Leon Senior Overcomes Adversity To Sign College Scholarship

Posted

TALLAHASSEE, Fl. (WTXL) - "She said I'm here. I'm here for the team," recalled Leon head volleyball coach Angie Strickland through tears. "I've been here since 9th grade. I'm finishing it out."

Strickland told friends and family at Kate Carter's soccer signing to Stetson about the moment Carter tore her ACL back in July. Her senior season seemingly over before it began - but that's not Carter.

"We knew when we had Kate and we sat her down, you can do whatever you want to do your senior year, enjoy it!" added Strickland. "It's your last year, or you can come in here and coach like we do!"

"After you figure out what's happened, what the game plan is going to be, the strategy, I was one it," said Carter. "I wasn't worried about it and I had my team. It wasn't a huge mountain, it was a steady climb the whole time."

A steady climb Carter helped both volleyball and soccer overcome. She scored the game winner in a postseason volleyball match, and the first goal in the Lions District Championship win for soccer, and now, she's a Division I signee.

"It's just kind of a culmination of all of the work that me and everyone else has put in this final year," smiled Carter. "Signing these papers to me is kind of like beating the ACL injury. I've decided to be done with it now that I've signed these papers."

"There's more of those kids that need to be found and brought into sports," added Strickland. "It's truly an amazing story."

An amazing story and an amazing comeback.
