TALLAHASSEE, Fl. (WTXL) - Two weeks ago, Corey Fuller stepped down after two years as head coach at Godby to take a job at Gadsden County.
The Cougars didn't have to look far to find his replacement, as on Monday, offensive line coach Brandon McCray was officially announced as the Cougars new head coach.
It's been a long time coming, as McCray's been an assistant at several schools over the last decade, and to have the opportunity to continue the success that Godby High is known for is still a little bit surreal for the new head coach.
"Just being from Tallahassee and growing up here and being in their shoes not so long ago, it definitely they showed their excitement I already feel right now," he said.
"They've been behind him this whole time. As soon as I came in and told them our old coach is gone, this is our interim coach, they all cheered, they were all excited," said Athletic District Jackie Burkette, who said she got around fifty applicants for the job. "Over the last couple of weeks, during this whole process, they were like Mrs. Jackie, Mrs. Jackie, we really want Coach McCray. I've had parent calls, e-mails, text messages, you name it. This whole program really is behind him."
McCray said he still has some coaching positions to fill on staff, and plans to finalize those soon.
