GREENSBORO, N.C. – Florida State redshirt senior Alexa Deluzio scored 19 points to lead the Seminoles to a 70-58 win over Miami in the first quarterfinal of the 2013 ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament on Friday morning at Greensboro Coliseum.
The win marks the third time Florida State has advanced to the tournament semifinals as it defeated Miami in the first ACC Tournament meeting between the two schools.
Deluzio carried the No. 4-seeded Seminoles to victory with 19 total points, including three 3-pointers. Senior forward Chelsea Davis was Florida State’s second leading scorer with 15 points and three assists.
Miami’s offense led the Hurricanes to the lead in the first half, which reached five points at its largest point with 13:24 to play until halftime. Senior center Shawnice Wilson, the leading scorer for Miami’s first round win against Virginia Tech, contributed seven of the team’s 23 points first-half points.
Senior guard Stefanie Yderstrom scored five quick points and forward Morgan Stroman shot a pair of free throws to bring Miami within three points of Florida State, 42-39, at the 10:20 mark midway through the second half.
Chasity Clayton’s jumper with 10:06 remaining in the second half made her the 28th Seminole to reach the 1,000-point club.
In the end, Florida States offense could not be stopped. Deluzio had 10 points in the last 10 minutes of play to carry the Seminoles to the 70-58 victory. The Seminoles finished with an overall 36.2 field goal percentage.
Miami’s Wilson tallied 18 points and 18 rebounds, her fourth double-double in the last six games. The 18 boards ties for fourth on the ACC Tournament single-game list.
Florida State improves to 22-8, 12-7 in the ACC, and 3-0 against Miami for the season. The Seminoles will play in the first game of the semifinals on Saturday, March 9 at 1 p.m. against NC State or No. 1 seed Duke.
