VALDOSTA, Ga. (WTXL) — For the 22nd ranked Valdosta State men’s basketball team, this past weekend's sweep over Auburn-Montgomery came with a little extra cherry on top as head coach Mike Helfer captured career win number 500 in Friday night's contest.
After the game, Helfer reflected on his journey and the many people that have been brought into his life because of it. In a career that has spanned for many years including 16 as a Blazer, Helfer credits his success to the people who gave him the opportunity to create something meaningful in Titletown.
The university made sure that their beloved coach would know just how much he means to them.
“Our players had t-shirts, there was a ball presented to me, it was special. But I don’t want to start with one player or one assistant coach, one administration, no there’s been many administrations. I would say this I’ve worked for two athletic directors only in my life, Carl Staber and Herb Reinhart, I feel blessed to be able to be in it this long," Helfer said.
"It’s a tough profession and I would tell you that in today’s world to continue to be successful kids are changing as we change from when we were growing up. Each generation kind of changes a little bit, you’ve got to adjust and we’ve been able to do that.”
VSU will hit the road this weekend for a Friday/Saturday doubleheader against West Florida.
