Valdosta State women's basketball ready for much needed break

VALDOSTA, Ga. (WTXL) — There is nothing but good cheer in Valdosta, as the Lady Blazers upended nationally ranked Lee in overtime Saturday.

The Lady Blazers are now taking a much needed break. They will return after Christmas to get back to Gulf South play. Valdosta State with an interesting dynamic this season. They have a lot of talented seniors, but several transfers, and this is a group that's still learning to play together.

The ladies were picked to finish fourth in the Gulf South east. That's been motivating enough, but they're ready to welcome a few days off before the grind continues.

"We had eight days where they had finals and three games and one of those was on the road. We got back at like 4:30 in the morning," said head coach Deandra Schirmer. "This group, to gut it out when we're kind of tired. You saw our legs a little bit down the stretch, we're not hitting shots. Te need the break. We need to see our family, get refocused, and be laser sharp on our next opponent."

Next up for the 3-0 Lady Blazers is a double header with Auburn Montgomery January 2nd and 3rd in Valdosta.
