VALDOSTA, Ga. (WTXL) — The Valdosta State women's basketball team is off to their best start in a decade and a half. The Lady Blazers are 5-0 on the year as they get ready for their first conference doubleheader road trip of the season.
The Lady Blazers travel to Shorter, where they'll face the Hawks first Friday before turning around to face them again Saturday. The doubleheaders are new to Gulf South teams this year. The format was enacted to limit travel in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. It's a different format, but one head coach Deandra Schirmer said will only prepare them for what's ahead, as come tournament time, playing back-to-back games is the norm.
"We look at it as it's preparing us for what we have down the line," she said. "It is going to be a struggle. We talked about it; it is going to be tough. As long as we can stay focused on the goal at hand and make sure we're getting that body recovery a little bit."
Friday's match-up is set for a 7:00 tip at Shorter.
