VALDOSTA, Ga. (WTXL) - The #8 Blazer men's basketball team tied the school-record with its 18th straight win in a 96-73 win over Montevallo in the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament.
Valdosta State advances to Birmingham for the semifinals on Saturday against either union or west Alabama. VSU was led by 24 points from junior Burke Putnam and 22 points from senior Bryce Smith as both led four starters in double figures. VSU surpassed last seasons win total improving to 25-3 this season.
Mike Helfer was also named the Gulf South Conference's Coach of the Year. Helfer has now received the recognition four times in his career. Senior Clay Guillozet was named the GSC Player of the Year.
