TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 2, 2020) – Tallahassee Community College's baseball team swept Monday's doubleheader from Grand Rapids (Mich.) Community College, winning by the scores of 3-2 and 4-1.
The Eagles are now 14-8 on the season.
Both games followed a similar script for Tallahassee – solid pitching and timely hitting.
In the opener, Matt Cooper (2-0) allowed only one hit and struck out seven through six innings. The Eagles gave him all the offense needed with a three-urn third, highlighted by Orlando Adams' two-run homer.
Leighton Alley recorded the final three outs for his second save, although a couple of defensive errors, combined with a two hits, allowed the Raiders to score twice and load the bases before a ground out to second ended the game.
Andrew Fernandez was 2-for-2. Adams was 1-for-2 with the 2-run homer.
In the nightcap, Jude Ard (3-2) struck out seven and allowed only four hits in five innings. He moved into position for the win when Tallahassee broke a 1-all tie with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, all with two outs.
A two-run triple by Fernandez scored Connor Rakow and Spencer Hanson. Adams followed with a double to bring home Fernandez and give the Eagles a 4-1 lead.
Nolan Daniel recorded the final six outs, four by way of strikeout, for his fourth save.
Weather permitting, the Eagles will host Thomas University's JV squad for a doubleheader at 3 p.m. Wednesday as head coach Mike McLeod goes for career wins Nos. 999 and 1000.
