TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (TCC Athletics) — Drake Logan's one-out single in the top of the ninth scored Colby Smelley with the go-ahead run and Shelton (Ala.) State Community College beat Tallahassee Community College, 5-4, in Friday's rubber game of the teams' three-game series.
Tallahassee is now 6-6 on the season.
With no one on and one out in the ninth, Smelley singled to left off Patrick Libby, the fifth of sixth pitchers used by the Eagles on Friday, then moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Following a walk, Logan singled to left and Smelley slid in just ahead of a near-perfect throw from left fielder Dilan Lawson.
Libby (2-1), who inherited and successfully escaped a two-out, bases-loaded jam in the eighth, was charged with the loss.
Tallahassee brought the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth when Orlando Adams drew a two-out walk, but pinch-hitter Nick Niewulis grounded out to second to end the game.
The Eagles built a 4-1 lead behind a two-run first and two-run third, the latter courtesy of Spencer Hanson's two-run homer to left. He finished 1-for-3 and also had a RBI-groundout in the first inning.
Trent Jeffcoat (2-for-4) had the Eagles' other two hits.
Shelton State scored three runs in the fourth to tie the game and knock out Tallahassee starter Trey Bacon.
Tallahassee will return to action on Tuesday when it travels to South Georgia State College for a 4 p.m. game.
