TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) — The Florida State Men's Golf team completed their spring season opener on a high note, winning the second hole of a playoff to emerge as champions of the Camp Creek Seminole Invitational held at Camp Creek Golf Club in Watersound, Fla.
“I’ve been fortunate at Florida State to have many great team wins and many great days with our golf program here,” FSU Head Coach Trey Jones said. “This day ranks right there at the top of the list of regular-season wins. It was such a great thing to see these guys come together and how they played.
“We had five guys finish in the Top nine of the golf tournament. For a field like this, it’s really a testament to our balance and depth.”
Florida State’s playoff win came over Wake Forest, with both teams entering the extra holes knotted at 22-under.
“For us to come out with a playoff win over Wake Forest, another great team, was an unbelievable experience,” Jones said. “Our playoff was led by our freshman Brett Roberts who had two great pars, Connor Futrell who had two great pars as well. I’m proud of them and it’s fun to see this thing come together.”
All five FSU golfers finished within the top nine of the final player leaderboard out of the 60 competing golfers in the tournament. The win marks the 90th tournament victory in program history, including the 12th since 2015.
Senior Connor Futrell had a phenomenal day for the Seminoles in the final round after shooting 5-under 67. He finished with the best score for the Noles over the weekend and tied for third on the player leaderboard after carding 7-under overall (73-69-67).
Futrell's third-place finish at Camp Creek Golf Club tied Mark Power (-7) from Wake Forest and only trailed Jacob Bridgeman (-15) from Clemson and Peter Fountain (-10) from North Carolina. His round on Tuesday, which included six birdies, also tied for the second-lowest score on the day. He tied for the lowest score on par 3 holes in the tournament, averaging 2.75.
“Connor could not have showed me any more than he did,” Jones said. “This is a guy who loves being at Florida State, has always been a Seminole, and gave us everything he had on every shot. To see him finish third in a field that is one of the top college tournaments in the country is a testament to his ability.”
Senior All-American John Pak and graduate transfer Vincent Norrman completed the tournament with strong performances of their own with both players finishing at 4-under overall and tied for seventh on the player leaderboard. Norrman was the only Seminole golfer in the tournament that didn't finish any of the three rounds played over par (72-68-72).
“John used his experience and used his short game and gutted this one out,” Jones added.
Freshman Brett Roberts had his best round of the tournament by recording a 3-under 69 and finished at 2-under overall (71-70-73). Redshirt senior Greyson Porter recorded 1-over 73 on the day and joined Roberts at 2-under overall. Both Roberts and Porter finished tied for ninth in the invitational. Porter wound up tying for the best par 5 scoring average at 4.33.
Redshirt sophomore Cole Anderson, who was an individual-based player not counting toward FSU’s team score, shot 3-over 75 in the final round and recorded 1-under (67-73-75) on the weekend. He also led all individual-based players in the tournament and tied for 15th overall.
The FSU men's golf team will return to action next week when they play in the Timuquana Collegiate on Jan. 25-26 at Timuquana Country Club in Ponte Vedra, Fla.
