VALDOSTA, Ga. (WTXL) - A Region title is on the line Friday night in Lowndes County, as the Vikings of Lowndes High host Colquitt County and the winner is the AAAAAAA Region 1 Champion. Tt's a match-up of the top two teams in the state of Georgia in AAAAAAA football. There are two teams with electric offenses, as they're both averaging right around 40 points per game. Their defense isn't too shabby either, as the Vikings are giving up a touchdown and Colquitt County is surrendering just 12 points per game.
"They're such a traditional program that's won and done things right for so long," said Colquitt County head coach Justin Rogers, who's in his first season at the helm of the Packer program. "Coach McPherson is just a proven commodity that's done so much and there's no doubt it's a rivalry between the two teams, but there's so much respect as well."
"New coach has done a great job," added Lowndes' Randy McPherson of Rogers. "Our kids have been playing well and preparing well. I feel like we'll be ready to play.>
There are play makers on both sides of the ball for both teams. This is a big one, but these are two teams that are used to the spotlight. The Packs lone loss? To Lowndes' biggest rival Valdosta. Neither team is looking too much into that, as they're focused week by week, and this week the focus is on each other and winning that Region crown.
"You come in every Friday night, it's a totally different ball game," said Rogers. "It's two quality programs that are going to get after each other pretty good. I expect a really good football game."
"What matters is who's going to win that night in this stadium," said McPherson. "That's the only thing that matters. Winner wins the Region and it's definitely the biggest game of the year."
Friday night's game is set for an 8:00 kick at Lowndes.
