TALLAHASSEE, Fl. (WTXL) -- According to Live Oak police, Alaina Szortyka was stabbed to death by Casey Cason outside of Cason's home on 5th street in Live Oak, on July 19th. Szortyka's family says that she and Cason were best friends and the stabbing had occurred during an argument between the two.
Her father, Kevin Szortyka Sr., says it is outrageous that someone would bring a knife to an argument, but believes it wasn't a spur of the moment decision. "She brought a kitchen knife out into the front yard, we think that is premeditated", says Skortya Sr, "You can't have a phone call and know somebody is coming to your house and then grab a knife without premeditating what you're going to do. She knew exactly what she was doing."
Szortyka's brother, Kevin Jr., also says he's unsure what led up to the stabbing: "I can speculate, but that's all it is, speculation", he said, "I don't think it was anything to do with race. I don't think it was anything to do with anything too serious. I think it just got out of hand. I think that an argument just got out of hand."
The family will be holding a candlelight vigil and will be holding a peaceful gathering to celebrate Alaina's life in front of the Live Oak courthouse next Monday, at 4 p.m.
