VALDOSTA, Ga. (WTXL) - Firefighters are in high demand in the Valdosta area and the fire department says they are keeping a positive outlook after an open house this weekend.

Battalion Chief Johnny Henry says they are looking to recruit more firefighters with a wide range of demographics that represents the growing community.

Chief Henry says currently they have 90 firefighters, but they would like to add more female and bilingual speaking candidates.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, only seven percent of firefighters are women.

The chief reminds potential candidates that this is a physical as well as community driven career.

The next open house will be February 25th. For more information visit valdostacity.com.
