TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The United Way of the Big Bend is recruiting 200 volunteers for the "Reading Pals" program. Volunteers are matched one-to-one with a child in kindergarten, first, or second grade.

Volunteers will be needed to read to a child one hour per week (4:30-5:30 p.m.) for 25 weeks, which will be from September 2013 through April 2014. The volunteer can choose their school and their day.

The weekly curriculum is already developed and tailored to each child's reading needs. The volunteer will receive training from United Way of the Big Bend, the district school system, and Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Last year, 10 Leon County Schools participated. This year, two more schools have been added, including Havana Elementary School.
