ATLANTA (CBS46) - CBS46 is sad to report that Tripp Halstead has died.

Tripp was severely injured when a tree limb landed on him in 2012 but kept fighting.

His mother posted a picture on Facebook Thursday morningsaying he woke up with a high heart rate and labored breathing. He passed away at 5:47 p.m.

Tripp was playing outside of his Winder daycare when a tree branch snapped and landed on him, crushing his skull.

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms offered her condolences in a tweet sent out yesterday, saying "My twins are 7. Such a painful reminder of how fragile & fleeting life is. Let’s hug our kids a little tighter today."

The Dawg House Mentality Show with J.B. and Randy is asking Georgia Governor Nathan Deal for a special day in Halstead's honor. They tweeted out their request on Thursday, saying "A very special member of my Jackson County community passed away, Tripp Halstead passed away. Prayers for his strong parents & family during this difficult time. Tripp never quit fighting. Rest easy bud. Governor Deal, can we have a Tripp Halstead Day in his honor?"

Countless others have sounded off on social media, offering condolences and support for the family. A woman named Sabrina Moore summed it up nicely in a tweet sent out Thursday. She wrote, "Crying for a little boy and family I never met but feel like I’ve known for years through the posts from his beautiful, strong mother. This family has touched and inspired countless people. So very sorry for your loss."

Millions tracked his progress and setbacks after he was placed in a medically induced coma. His Facebook page has 1.3 million followers.

Tripp's funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 18. A visitation will be held from 3 p.m until 7 p.m. at the Jefferson Civic Center in Jefferson, Georgia. A memorial service will immediately follow at 7 p.m.
