MIAMI (AP) — Officials at Zoo Miami are getting their first look at a Matchie's tree kangaroo's joey.
Zoo officials believe the joey may have been born about five months ago, but finally poked its head out for a few glimpses on Thursday. It's too soon to tell whether the hairless baby is a boy or girl.
The mother is 5 ½ years old and is on loan from the Gladys Porter Zoo in Texas. Zoo Miami has been a long time contributor to Matchie's tree kangaroo conservation efforts in the wilds of New Guinea. The zoo says the baby is the second to be born in the U.S. this year.
The mother and joey will not be available to the public for several more weeks. The joey will not be totally weaned until its first birthday.
