THOMASVILLE, Ga. (WTXL) - The Thomasville Police Department's fleet is getting a makeover.

This after the city council in the Rose City approved the funds for six new patrol vehicles.

Officials say that they are moving away from the traditional Crown Victoria units on the streets currently and on to something bigger and better.

"Crown Victorias are the vehicles that we're replacing, they're phased out. Ford does not make them anymore. Therefore we have gone to Ford Explorers," said Major Eric Hampton, with the Thomasville Police Department. "Basically the new patrol cars are bigger on the inside. They can take on the equipment such as in car videos, radars, as well as having an additional officer ride inside the vehicle with the driver. So it helps us a lot with the space.

Major Hampton says that the city tries to make annual improvements to their fleet, and that all of the new cars will come with built in cameras to better protect the community and increase officer accountability.

As for the last few Crown Victorias? They may be gone as early as 2018.
