TALLAHASSEE, Fla.-- Tallahassee Memorial Hospital board members approved plans to build a new surgery and adult intensive care facility expected to cost about $170 million.
"It's going to be one of the largest construction projects in Leon County history," said Warren Jones, a spokesman for Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. The new facility will be five stories and more than 300,000 square feet.
"This is an exciting time," said Jones, "because we've been looking to announce this for over five years."
The building will be equipped with more operating and adult ICU rooms and will allow for more expansion throughout the next 50 years.
"Much of the facility will be shelled in," said Jones. "We'll be building ICU's and surgical spaces as we need them."
Jones says architectural and financial plans are their next step. The project is expected to be completed in 2016 or 2017.
