KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (AP) — The two-day spiny lobster recreational season begins in Florida.
Thousands of snorkelers and divers are expected to try to catch the tasty crustaceans for the mini season that runs Wednesday and Thursday.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says this allows for thousands to enjoy Florida's resources. But spokesman Jorge Pino also cautions divers to follow the rules — there are size requirements and bag limits a person can take home of these lobsters.
Authorities also urge divers to be weary of current conditions and to stay hydrated. During some years, lobster divers have died during the mini-seasons. Authorities reported one death last year in the Florida Keys.
The regular commercial and recreational lobster season starts Aug. 6 and runs through March 31.
