TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Tallahassee Seniors could be getting a second Senior Center soon.

The idea is still in the planning stages. City leadership is listing it as a top priority.

Monday, residents took part in a listening session designed to get input related to a second senior center.

The proposed plan for the second senior center calls for it to be built in the northeast part of the city along the Welanuee Boulevard extension on acreage in the Canopy development donated by Premier Fine Homes.

According to the 2010 Census data, the highest number of people aged 60 years and older live in the east and northeast areas of the community.

The proposal also calls for a 30,000 square foot facility with an adjacent 30,000 square foot recreation center and a shared-use, multi-purpose gymnasium, which would accommodate activities, classes and programs for active adults.

The most recent generation of seniors has been using what was once an Armory Building on North Monroe Street. Though spacious, and always bustling with activity, the center can't seem to keep up with the needs of Tallahassee's growing senior demographic.

The Tallahassee City Commission ranks building a new center as one of its highest priorities to receive funding from 2020 sales tax revenues.

There will also be a follow-up session on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
