BAINBRIDGE, Ga. (WTXL) - Nearly three months after Hurricane Michael, it's looking like one of Bainbridge's historic buildings will actually survive.
Every building in downtown Bainbridge has its own story, and the Callahan Building is no different.
Originally, the building was a naval store owned by J. W. Callahan, who also owned a fleet of steamboats. Since then, it has been converted into five commercial units with seven residential areas upstairs, all of which were occupied when Hurricane Michael stormed through Bainbridge.
The hurricane ripped off the awning, with many pieces falling to the ground and blown around the city.
"We had a huge sign that was on top of the building in the cornice area that collapsed and penetrated through the roof," said Amanda Glover, Downtown Development Authority Director.
Glover said that Doug Young, the new owner of the building, has already worked on several buildings in downtown and has a passion for restoring the historic buildings.
Although Hurricane Michael caused substantial damage to the building, the community and the new owner have pulled together to help salvage the building and return it to its former glory.
It's estimated that the restoration process could take six to eight months to complete, and the city is excited to see the Callahan Building stay.
