VALDOSTA, Ga. (WTXL)— A fundraiser is coming up for music students at Valdosta State University.

It's called Pops in the Park. It's set for Thursday, October 16 from 6-8 p.m. Valdosta State University’s Music Scholarship Alliance is putting on the event.

General admission tickets are $15 for adults, $8 for students and senior citizens, and free for children ages 12 and under.

Pops in the Park will feature performances by VSU’s Steel Drum Band, The Spotlighters, and much more. Special guests include Kenyon Carter, on saxophone, and Tania Myers, on vocals. They'll join both jazz ensembles and the faculty combo onstage.

Proceeds from Pops in the Park will benefit scholarships for music students at VSU.

Dr. Doug Farwell, the department head of the music department, says the Music Scholarship Alliance raised a little more than $4,000 during the 2013 fundraiser. He described the annual event as an opportunity to invest in students.

“Due to having to perform and work during the evenings and on weekends,” said Farwell. “Music students have a difficult time scheduling work outside of school."

He says scholarship money is welcome and helps them get through their degree programs quicker and with less debt.

He says some students have to bear the burden of buying instruments which can cost more than $15,000.

Farwell said Pops in the Park is great family entertainment and encouraged parents to bring their children.
