VALDOSTA, Ga. (WTXL) - A Valdosta police officer has been injured after being involved in a car accident.

The Valdosta Police Department says that the officer involved was issued a citation for the accident.

They say that on Tuesday morning around 4:45 a.m., Officer David Fawcett responded to a burglary in progress call from East Park Avenue. When the officer pulled out onto the road, VPD says he didn't notice that his headlights were not on.

After pulling out on the road, another car driven by a Valdosta man moved from the center lane into the lane where the officer's patrol car was.

As a result, the cars crashed into each other, leaving both Officer Fawcett and the man with minor injuries.

VPD says Officer Fawcett was issued a citation for not turning on his headlights. They note that any officer found in violation of Georgia Traffic Laws is subject to disciplinary action per department policy.

“As we have demonstrated over and over again, we police ourselves. Officer Fawcett made a mistake and he was cited like any other citizen. He will be subject to disciplinary action but he is a good officer who was responding to an emergency call”, stated Chief Brian Childress.
