TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - The Florida Senate is poised to vote on a bill that would put an end to permanent alimony in Florida.
Senators discussed the bill (SB 718) on Wednesday and could vote on it next week. It would replace permanent alimony with support that has a foreseeable end.
It also would make it harder to get alimony in marriages of fewer than 10 years. The presumption in favor of alimony in long-term marriages could be overcome with "clear and convincing evidence." And the bill generally would prevent courts from ordering alimony for longer than one-half of the length of a marriage.
The family law section of The Florida Bar has opposed the bill but alimony-overhaul advocates have been in favor. A companion bill (HB 231) is in the House.
