(WTXL) - Of course Halloween is most known for costumes and candy, but a close third is pumpkin carving.

But before you get to the knives, it's important to remember safety first.

Mark Daniel with Mark's Melon Patch in south Georgia says parents need to cut off the top of the pumpkin. They should use a knife to do that and let the kids watch.

When it comes time to gut the pumpkin, he says, let the kids take over. That way they don't cut themselves.

Daniel adds that for optimal freshness the best time to cut pumpkins is three or four days before Halloween. This way they are still fresh on the big day.
