VALDOSTA, GA (WTXL) - Officials are investigating the death of a Valdosta State Prison inmate.

The Georgia Department of Corrections confirmed that they are looking into the incident.

The say an inmate, identified as Caleb Mitchell, was found unresponsive in his cell. Mitchell was transported by ambulance to a hospital after staff attempted to revive him.

But Wednesday morning, he was pronounced dead by a hospital physician. GDC is conducting an investigation into the death, as is standard procedure.

The circumstances surrounding Mitchell's hospitalization and death have not been released at this time.

Mitchell was sentenced with Robbery by Intimidation in 2015, in Union County.

This makes the seventh inmate death for the Valdosta State Prison in two years.
