MOULTRIE, Ga. (WTXL) - Officials in Georgia want you to know more about elder abuse case after a Moultrie woman was arrested for battery.

Carolyn Edwards is accused of hurting an 87-year-old man.

In addition to battery, she's facing counts of exploitation of an elderly person.

Authorities have not confirmed if Edwards was the caretaker of that man but we do know that the incident did happen at Pruitthealth—Magnolia Manor in Moultrie.

Officials say elder abuse is a real problem throughout the state.

New laws passed in recent years are aimed to help combat the issue of elderly abuse.

In 2013, stiffer penalties were put in place for physical, mental or financial abuse or cruelty to people over age 65 and the handicapped.

And just late year a law passed that created a nurse aid registry for all certified nursing assistants.

Victims have also now been given the right to testify by video recording in these cases.
