Mandatory evacuation ordered for Jefferson County

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - A mandatory evacuation order has been issued for low lying flood areas and mobile homes in Jefferson County.

Due to the increase in severity of Hurricane Michael, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Management officials have ordered a mandatory evacuation for the citizens in the following areas for low lying flood areas, mobile and modular homes.

Water Distribution points have been set up in the following locations:

o Lamont at River Road and South Salt Road behind Old Reams Store

o Lloyd VFD across from Main Street

o Aucilla Christian School, front of school on Aucilla/Drifton Hwy

o Walkers Store at intersection of Waukeenah Hwy and US 27 In front of store

Sandbag locations are still available and self-serve at the following locations:

1. Wacissa across from the church at the old post office

2. Lloyd at the county dump site

3. Monticello the old fire department next to the road department

Risk Shelter is open: Jefferson Somerset School, 50 David Road, Monticello, FL 32344

Schools closed Tuesday through Thursday. City and County Government offices are closed.

Jefferson County declares local state of emergency, closes schools

JEFFERSON COUNTY (WTXL) - Jefferson County Board of County Commission has declared a local state of emergency.

City and county government offices will be closed Tuesday.

Shelters: In preparation for Hurricane Michael Jefferson County EM will be opening a shelter effective 12 p.m. Tuesday at Jefferson Somerset School (50 David Road, Monticello, FL 32344).

Schools: Closed Tuesday. Undetermined when schools will reopen. 

Jefferson Somerset School will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

Evacuations: Recommending a voluntary evacuation of low lying areas and mobile home occupants. 

Sand bag locations will open Monday at 2 p.m.

  • Wacissa: Across the street from the United Methodist Church 
  • Monticello: 1453 South Jefferson Street (Old Fire Department)
