TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) -- Wednesday marks the 12th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
Local ceremonies will be commemorating the more than 2,977 lives lost on September 11, 2001, now considered one of the the worst terrorist attacks in U.S. history. That is when 19 hijackers used box cutters to take control of 4 jetliners, crashing two of them into the two towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and crashing a fourth jetliner in an open field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Among those who lost their lives were 343 firefighters and 60 police officers, killed as they were helping to rescue others.
In the years that followed the terrorist attacks, the U.S. has lost more than 6,061 military service men and women during the midst of two wars.

Locally, there will be a number of events commemorating the 12th anniversary of the September 11 attacks and remembering those who lost their lives.
LEON COUNTY
Time: 7:00 AM
Location: Florida State University - Landis Green - University Way at Collegiate Loop
Memorial American Flag Display. The Students for America's Military of FSU is sponsoring a daylong memorial display of American flags.
Time: 8:30 AM
Location: Tallahassee Fire Department, Station 1, located at 327 North Adams Street
Tallahassee Fire Department along with Tallahassee Police Department, Leon County Sheriff's Office and Leon County EMS are hosting a September 11 Memorial Ceremony. An artifact steel beam from the World Trade Center, as well as the names of those who died will be on display.
Parking for the event will be available at Envision Credit Union located across from Fire Station 1 and can be accessed off of Carolina Street.
Time: 10:30 AM
Location: Florida State University School of Law located at 425 West Jefferson Street.
Leon County will host the third annual Day of Remembrance and Service Ceremony. Volunteers will be asked to sign up to assemble military care packages and also write notes of encouragement for local soldiers deployed overseas. Volunteer sign in begins at 10:30 a.m. and the formal ceremony begins at 11:00 a.m. with service activities immediately following.

WAKULLA COUNTY
Time: 8:30 AM
Location: Wakulla County Sheriff's Office, located at 15 Oak Street in Crawfordville.
The ceremony will begin at 8:46 a.m., the time the first terrorist aircraft attacked the World Trade Center in New York City. All emergency first responders will be honored.
LOWNDES COUNTY
Time: 8:45 AM
Location: Valdosta Fire Station #1, located at 106 South Oak Street.
Fire Chief J.D. Rice, Chief of Police Brian Childress, the combined Valdosta Fire and Police Honor Guard, and other members of the Valdosta Fire and Police Departments will be present to remember the innocent victims and honor the brave heroes who perished during the tragic event. The Valdosta Fire Department Pipe and Drum Corps will perform and a special flag presentation by the Woodmen of the World will also take place during the ceremony.
All events are open to the public.
