TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) -- Students and teachers at Governors Charter Academy in Tallahassee celebrated the birthday of a famed author with the "Dr. Seuss Reading-palooza" Friday.

An assortment of community leaders, including the Storm Team's chief meteorologist Casanova Nurse, participated by reading some of Dr. Seuss' classic rhyming stories to the students.

Casanova, along with Tallahassee Fire Department Chief Cindy Dick, read "Horton Hatches an Egg" to the school's Kindergarten classes.

The reading event was held as part of Read Across America Day, an awareness initiative from the National Education Association.  The occasion occurs in conjunction with the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel as an effort to expose children to the joy of reading.

Dr. Seuss passed away in 1991.  He was born 109 years ago Saturday.
