TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — Wine and beer drinkers beware.

According to public interest advocacy group U.S. PIRG, several popular brands of beer and wine contain the weed killer glyphosate.

Their test included several popular beers like Budweiser, Henieken and Coors as well as organic brands like Samuel Smith and Peak.

In total, U.S. PIRG tested five wines, 14 beers and one hard cider for the study.

"Of particular note, the study found that, despite weed killer products like Roundup being prohibited in the making of organic beers and wines, glyphosate was discovered in three of the four organic alcoholic beverages tested," the report states.

U.S. PIRG says the reported levels found in the alcoholic beverages didn't exceed EPA regulations, but are causing concern over potential health effects.

"While these numbers are below the EPA’s risk tolerances for beverages, at least one previous scientific study found that as little as one part per trillion of glyphosate can stimulate the growth of breast cancer cells and disrupt the endocrine system," the report states.

U.S. PIRG also made several recommendations to consumers who wish to avoid drinking beverages with weed killer in them.

- Ask stores, breweries and vineyards what their glyphosate police is, and encourage them to look for sustainable ways of growing produce.

- Lower your overall exposure to glyphosate by not spraying it in your home or garden.

- When possible, buy organic. While there may still be some contamination, the amounts of glyphosate found in organic samples is much lower than in conventional beer and wine.
