TAALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — There is a new call on Florida State University's Campus asking for better housing accommodations for transgender students.
A petition is making the rounds, asking the university to create dorm room halls specifically for transgender students.
Other asks include questions on the housing form to better match students and avoiding roommate matches that differ on LGBTQ+ rights.
It also pushes for more staff willing to discuss and help transgender and non-binary students.
Gender Odyssey is behind the push.
The president of Gender Odyssey, Jay Galante says these changes could change someone's entire college experience.
"I was tired of hearing stories of people who have been harassed and victimized by roommates who don't accept them," said Galante. "The reality is this is a material and psychological safety issue for transgender and gender non-conforming students at Florida State."
So far, the petition has gained 479 signatures and 35 organi.zations
The university didn't respond to a request for a comment.
