TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — Chief Financial Officer and State Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis hosted his annual Christmas tree burn demonstration with the Tallahassee Fire Department on Tuesday.

The event showed the importance of fire safety, especially during the holiday season.

There were discussions on how to keep Christmas trees hydrated, which helps prevent fires, and a reminder to have a fire escape plan in case of an emergency.

"Keeping your tree hydrated, making sure the bulbs of the lights are replaced because they can be potential points of a shortage, and make sure you have no open flames near the tree," said Patronis.

"If you have working smoke alarms, and a home fire escape plan, when that happens, you look at a tree that's just in a concrete room, take it to effect that you have furniture, drapes, how quickly that's going to spread," said Richard Jones, the Deputy Fire Chief.

One out of every 52 fires that happens related to a Christmas tree results in death.
