ST. GEORGE ISLAND, Fla. (WTXL) — St. George Island may now be one step closer to becoming its own municipality.

People who live there have reached out to Florida State University to organize a discussion about why incorporating the island may or may not be a good idea.

Participants identified what they treasured about the island as is, as well as goals they think could bring improvement, like better infrastructure.

FSU professor Dennis Smith hosted the conversation and looks forward to helping community members reach their goals.

"We'll even facilitate a further discussion about how you can achieve each of those goals through either different structures of governance or different arrangements for contracting and the like. So once that has been documented it really will be up to the community members to decide what they like to do next," said Dennis Smith, FSU Urban and Regional Planning Professor.

They'll hold a second session covering the same discussion topics Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., and afterward, they'll meet again on March 10.
