TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — Fresh produce is coming to the Southside. The Southside Farmers Market reopens this Thursday.
The Southside is a food desert, so the farmer's market will help neighbors get access to healthy fruits and veggies and take home some fresh food.
The TMH Community Needs Assessment says having access to healthy food needs to be a priority in Tallahassee, especially in the Southside community.
"This is so important because this is considered to be a food desert, so we need to provide options for folks to have healthy choices in food, healthy choices in learning, and how to take these things home and prepare food for their family so they can have healthy outcomes overall," said Dianne Williams-Cox, Tallahassee City Commissioner.
The farmer's market is open on the second and fourth Thursdays of every month from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Walker Ford Community Center.
The fruit and vegetable prescription class is also coming back this year.
It teaches participants how to shop at a farmer's market, how to cook the food they've bought, and provides them with vouchers that they can use.
