TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — Demonstrators marched through Tallahassee and chanted to leaders, carrying signs and asking for answers from police.
Protesters started out at the Capitol and made their way to the Police Department on Seventh Street. They are protesting what they call police brutality against black men in America.
One of the most recent ones being George Floyd in Minneapolis, who died after an encounter with a police officer earlier this week.
Protesters say they want people to stop and hear their message.
"We just want to be heard," said Jeffrey Dean, a student at Florida A&M University. "That's the purpose of all of this. A lot of people feel that we're being violent and it's not like that. We just want to be heard at the end of the day."
"I was 12 years old when Trayvon Martin was killed and I was unable to protest then when the Black Lives Matter movement just started," said Aleena, one of the protesters. "And I want to do my part now that I'm able too."
In response to Friday's demonstration Tallahassee police released this statement on behalf of Chief Lawrence Revell.
It reads, "It is a very emotional time across our nation, and we support the peaceful gathering of protesters in our community. "
The group says there are plans to have protests all weekend.
