MOULTRIE, Ga. (WTXL) — Questions are still swirling in Moultrie about the death of a three-month-old child.
The little boy was dropped during a fight between his mother and another woman. That baby's mother is now charged in his death.
Karen Harrison is charged with murder and child cruelty.
The judge says Harrison could be stuck behind bars for as long at October, that’s when her next court date is. That's because she’ll be appearing in front of state court for her felony murder charge and she can’t be out on bail for her misdemeanor charges of simple battery or child cruelty until that’s cleared up.
Police say the fact that she waited a day before seeking medical help for the baby complicated things.
“July 20, we had a three month old baby show up to the hospital that had a head injury," said Lt. Freddie Williams, with the Moultrie Police Department.
Harrison is in jail for felony murder along with her friend, Carneata Clark. Police say Clark went to the hospital lying about what happened to the infant. Clark now faces obstruction charges. And soon a third person could be behind bars too.
“We have identified the second person, there are some extenuating circumstances that have stopped us from making an arrest on the second female," said Williams.
Harrison’s family has been sharing this story all over social media, calling it a tragedy and a mistake.
Harrison has other kids but investigators won’t say whose care they’re under now.
A mother charged in the murder of her own baby after she dropped her child during a fight will not be allowed to bond out of jail.
We now know the court date of the mother involved in the death of a 3-month-old baby in Moultrie.
Karen Harrison will make her first court appearance on October 7 at 9 a.m. A judge denied Harrison's bond Monday evening.
Carneata Clark, the other woman who was not involved in the fight but allegedly help Harrison lie to investigators, still has pending charges.
It happened after a fight outside of Thomas Beauty Supply last Friday. Two women, one of them Harrison, were standing by the car when they started arguing.
One woman takes a swing at Karen Harrison, who was holding her 3-month-old. Several more people jump to break up the fight, but it was too late. The baby had already hit the pavement.
Police say when Harrison first took her baby to the hospital, she lied about what happened. The baby later died from his injuries sustained in the fall.
Authorities have not identified the other woman involved in the fight.
