MADISON COUNTY, Fla. — The people of Madison County are coming together to heal following the tragic deaths of two people, just hours apart.
Cheerleading, softball, and basketball for four years, Alilexica "Kay" Scurry was the shining star at Madison County High School in all three.
It came as a shock to the community to learn of her death Wednesday morning.
"She was a carefree student. Very respectful. All of the teachers enjoyed having her in class. They never had a problem with her," said Glyndell Presley, her former teacher.
And while the community was just hearing about the shocking death, another devastating blow hit them.
"He was swimming across the river to swing on the other side, he called back to his friends and said 'I'm having cramps.' They saw him go under and he never did resurface," said J. Harrell Reid, Hamilton County Sheriff.
Trey Mitchell drowned in Pots Springs in Jasper, just hours after Scurry's passing.
"He had a love for life that was so infectious and inspired everybody," said Jason Fletcher, his former baseball coach.
Back in 2017, Mitchell spoke with us when he was a baseball player for Madison High.
The administrators are coming together for the students at Madison High. They've canceled standardized testing this week to allow more time to heal on campus.
"Cause we are such a close knit community and like a family, we thought it would be in the best interest of the kids. They wouldn't be in the proper mind frame," said Bill Hightower, Madison High Principal.
Time that many students and teachers say they will need as they deal with losing two of those they call Madison's finest.
9th and 10th graders will take their FSA and ELA tests next Monday and Tuesday.
