As the school year comes to an end, a local mom is making sure learning continues throughout the summer.

Ashley Scott is a former teacher. She created a Facebook group called Creative Weekend Planning to keep kids engaged, while still learning at home.

Some of the lessons include financial literacy and mixing math with fitness.

She also gives students a chance to hear directly from professionals through zoom interviews.

The idea started from trying to keep her own kids busy.

“Once we realized that we weren’t going to Disney World for Spring Break like everybody else I can imagine, then it was like. "O.K., what are we going to do with the kids?'" said Scott. “So I knew that we had to curtail behaviors and all of those things. So it was a really creative way for me to create things for them to do based off of that.

This is truly a grass roots project. Scott started by posting tips on her own Facebook page and this idea grew from there.

“But then I had people and friends to call and say this is really helpful,” said Scott. “Can you send me stuff and inbox me. So then I said you know what I should just create a Facebook group with my friends and show them this is what we’re doing. They also have small kids and we can share ideas.”

It’s not just parents in the Big Bend benefiting from this. Some of the 600-plus members in the group are from Texas, Michigan and even overseas.
